Florida Panthers

How do human activities impact Florida’s iconic wildlife? Let’s explore the challenges facing the panther.

  1. Habitat Loss from Urbanization: The rapid expansion of housing and infrastructure has fragmented the Florida panther’s natural habitat, isolating populations and limiting access to prey.
  2. Road Collisions: Panthers are frequently hit by cars while crossing roads built through their habitats. These collisions are a leading cause of panther deaths in Florida.
  3. Agriculture and Deforestation: Land clearing for agriculture, cattle ranching, and logging has reduced the forests and wetlands panthers rely on for hunting and shelter.
  4. Water Diversion: Altering water systems for development or agriculture disrupts ecosystems and affects the availability of prey species for panthers.
  5. Invasive Species: Non-native species, like wild boars, compete with panthers for food and resources, while invasive plants degrade the habitat.
  6. Climate Change: Rising temperatures and sea levels threaten the panther’s low-lying habitats and prey availability, adding more pressure to an already endangered species.

What can we do? 🧐 Support habitat restoration, safe wildlife crossings, and sustainable land use practices. Our choices—whether it’s where we live, how we travel, or what we consume—can make a difference in protecting the Florida panther.
